Project Proposals

Due Date: 1/27/12

  1. Project Description: I will begin throwing on the wheel, figures that resemble pitchers. I hope to complete at least five. I want all of them to be atleast over a foot tall. From there, I will wait until they are leather hard and begin incorporating hand building clay, as well as subtracting pieces from the pitchers themselves. I don’t have the specifics because I really just want to dive into this and explore, and see what I can come up with. Once I determine exactly how I want to go about this, I can come back and fill in the specifics.
  2. Purpose/Objective: To combine hand building and throwing on the wheel. My goal is to step out of my comfort zone, and sort of just see what happens when I start working with it. I never really combined the two, and my wheel throwing has always been pretty simple. I’m excited to see how it goes, working with leather hard clay will really allow me to expand my capabilities.
  3. Materials: Clay, wheel throwing, slab roller, glaze, underglaze
  4. Time line: First week I want to begin throwing, see what forms I like most and what will be the best to work with. From there I will let them become leather hard. The second week I hope to start subtracting, adding, and seeing what will work best and how I really want to go about combining my wheel throwing and hand building skills. I hope to have this all completed by three weeks. Also, my large project from before is just now being fired. Throughout these weeks I will work on glazing that as well. That will take up a large portion of my time and therefore this current project may be pushed back a little.

  1. Project Description:  After getting some insight, I believe I will going back on the wheel to create more stacks of plates/bowls. This time however it will be much larger. I want to make it a bit more abstract maybe. I plan to throw three plates and then cutting off certain parts to create one large bottom with them. and perhaps maybe continuously doing this, putting plates together to create one, until I get closer to the top or the plates begin to get smaller. I think it’s going to be a little of of trail and error.
  2. Purpose/Objective: My purpose is to work with size, and to continue my theme or repetition and multiples. I really hope to make this a few feet tall, a main issue may be getting it to balance then or course I have to take into consideration how much this is going to weigh.
  3. Materials: clay, glaze, underglaze, firing, wheel
  4. Time line : I think this will definitely take me a few weeks to complete with glazing and all, it will definitely take a good portion of time. I wish to get the throwing done within about a week and a half or so. I think the glazing will take a little while, because of past experience and also because of all the small crevices I have to glaze. But that will really all depend on how I decide to glaze it, whether I am glazing each individual or the entire set one color. I will most likely glaze each individual one although I know it will take time and patience.

  1. Project Description:  I want to continue a theme in order to connect my projects this marking period, therefore I will continue to use repetitive pieces in order to create a larger sculpture. This time however, I will be making a large milk carton, approximately  15″ high, and 7″ wide. I will also be making about 4-5 other milk cartons each getting gradually smaller then the previous one. It will also be necessary that each carton has a removable lid, and also the only container with a handle will be the first, largest one, in order to allow the pieces to easily fit inside one another.
  2. Purpose/Objective: The goal is to be able to fit each milk carton inside of each other. I got this idea from the Russian dolls called Matryoshka dolls. I also wish to have a common theme, the fact that I am creating multiples, in order to connect my multiple projects. My purpose is also to take a break from working on the wheel and create these by using slaps.
  3. Materials: clay, glaze, underglaze, firing
  4. Time line : I already have some clay prepared so I plan on having my first carton done by the end of next week, to allow time for trial and error. I then hope to create the smaller pieces at a much quicker pace, hopefully 2 cartons per week. If all goes as planned I should hopefully have this project completed by 10/21/11.

  1. Project Description: Working in the ceramics room on the wheel, I plan to create a kitchen set including plates, bowls, and cups/mugs. However I plan on creating multiples of each and stacking them on-top of  one another while they are still wet, allowing them to be stuck together. They will have the appearance of a stack of dishes that you can take apart, when in fact you really can’t. The plates will be an approximate size of 7″-8″ and the stack as high as 2 to 3 feet or as high as possible. The bowls will be an approximate size of 6″-7″ and the stack as high as 2-3 feet or as high as possible. The cups/mugs will be about 3″-4″ and as 2-3 feet or as high as possible. As for glazing I am unsure of the exact color at this time, however I plan to have them in similar shades or maybe the exact same to show they are a set.
  2. Purpose/Objective: My purpose is to create a unique set of dishes that looks ordinary but is in fact itself a sculpture. I hope to capture the attention of others with their height and unique structure.
  3. Materials: Clay, glaze, underglaze, firing
  4. Time line (include completion date): By the first 2-3 days I want to have all my clay prepared and ready to be thrown on the wheel. By the beginning of the second week I hope to have completed enough plates to create the first stack, piling them on as I work. By the beginning of the third week I wish to have my bowls complete and finish up my third week with the cups/mugs.
