Bullets:

  • Arabic writing
  • very diverse
  • elegant/graceful
  • primary colors
  • simplistic shapes
  • religious
  • symbolic
  • traditional
I was really drawn to this artist because of his very interesting approach of glazing. Much of his work is covered in Arabic, and have the words Allah (God), er-Rouh (the soul), and Huwa (Him which evokes God) on them. But it’s fascinating how he incorporated this into his ceramics so that these words become a divine piece of art work. Much of his work is functional such as cups and plates. However, he is also inspired by Islamic funerary architecture. He also has some public sculptures and installations. He is a very well-rounded and diverse artist I think thi has a lot to do with all his travel.

  • exotic animals
  • dark claybody
  • incorporation
  • electric kiln
  • similar shapes
  • wheel thrown
What first caught my attention was her incorporation on animals into these very simiplistic wheel thrown forms. They look so natural through, as if they were really part of the pot and supposed to be there. Looking at her sight, she has many pieces that are like this. She has many pieces with fish, and eels. I really like how she works it out as if the fish appears to be stuck through the pot, or an actual part of it. She also has a lion, elephant and one with frogs. I absolutely love the elephant one. I love how natural these forms are. She is a high school art teacher and does her own work on the side mostly during the summer using her own kiln. She uses a lot of her pieces for a silent auction fundraiser to help raise money so her students can afford more art materials. She teaches from example and definitely has a lot to offer her students since she is such a talented artist herself.

Bullets:

  • bright glazes
  • summer
  • fruit and nature
  • simplistic shapes
  • very detailed cravings
  • technique with underglaze
  • flowers
What first caught my attention with his work was the really bright glazes he used. We only have a limited amount of glazes unfortunately so it isn’t that often that I am able to see how other colors would be used. He has a very bright and summery feel to all of his work. A lot of it consists of different flowers and fruits. It is evident that he spends a lot of time on each of the pieces. A majority are hand thrown on the wheel then altered with hand formed pieces. I think it’s interesting how he can add so much texture by simply altering a piece in one way. Many of his ceramic pots have the same shape/feel to them but they are all so different with the glazes. Also by adding and subtracting from his work it really separates them from eachother.

Bullets:

  • detailed underglaze
  • drawings on pottery
  • neutral colors
  • similar shapes
  • paint buckets
  • unique glazing techniques
  • gold glaze
I love how she is capable of taking everyday objects such as fire hydrants and paint buckets and recreating them in ceramics. She turns simple objects into beautiful artworks. She keeps her glaze colors really simple then draws detailed pictures on her ceramic pieces that tell a story. Many of the images of are mills or steel factories and blast furnaces. At first I was confused until I read her bio, she grew up in Pittsburgh and was strongly influenced by the Steel City’s dying industry. She recreates the images of abandoned graffiti covered factories in her work. What I love most is her gallon paint buckets. They have a simple white outside with beautiful bright colored glazes overflowing. It’s a really creative unique idea, I’d be interested to try myself.

  • nature
  • sticks as handels
  • japanese influence
  • natural materials
  • glazing techniques
  • wall murals
  • saggar-fired pieces
  • potter’s wheel

The first thing that caught my attention about her works was her glazing, I could tell it was not glaze because it didn’t have drips or a glossy appeal or anything to it, it looked very random and spur of the moment. When reading up on her, I found out that she surrounds her porcelian works with natural materials from earth which produces a variety of smoky colors. I was so fascinated by this, because you never know the outcome of the piece until it’s fired. It really is a different way to decorate the ceramic piece. I love how create it is, because in my opinion glazing can become quite boring and repetitive. Also, sticking with her nature theme, instead of pulling handles for the tops of her pitchers, she uses stones and sticks. I thought this was a little strange but I think it definitely works well with all her ceramic creations. Besides the pitchers, she has collections of tiles which together create these beautiful ceramic murals, or just  a wall of tiles. She uses subtraction and addition to make them stand out, as well as a variety of brightly colored glazes. I think they’re a fresh and new approach compaired to her other works.

  • cake
  • glass and mixed media
  • extreme details
  • decorative
  • realistic
  • cartoons
I was first draw in by  a ridiculous looking ceramic cake with Einstein’s head sticking out of it. I thought this piece was so interesting because not only does it look very detailed and real but its is so strange it really captures my attention. It looks as if Einstein really did just stick his face in the cake and is now indulging in the chocolate icing. However Einstein is not the first person to come up. He uses many many artists and people such are Picasso, Warhol, Leonardo, Dali, and Van Gogh. In many of his pieces he either incorporates these people or incorporates the work they have done.  The pieces all seem very decorative and detailed and I loved that he used paint on top of the ceramics, it really makes the pieces stand out. However this is only work I could admire but never really create myself. I enjoy looking at it but it is definitely not my style of work.

  • gold/platinum accents
  • handkerchief bowls
  • functional
  • decorative
  • unique
  • design
  • spirals
What I loved about this ceramic artist right away is that her work appear simple yet very elegant. She uses 24K gold accents on a majority of her clay pieces in order to make them shine and stand out. A lot of her pieces were handkerchief bowls which I’ve never heard of. They are flat pieces of roundish or square slabs which are curled up on the sides to create a bowl. She then uses underglaze and creates detailed backgrounds like leaves flowers, and spirals. I admire her elegance and simplicity of her work. It has definitely allowed me to think outside the box when creating sculptures that are still functional. However I think that if she create larger pieces and perhaps tried doing something other then bowls, it would turn out really well.

Bullets:

  • light colors
  • form
  • spring/mountains
  • carving
  • porcelain clay
  • landscapes

Looking at Peter’s work I was amazed at how perfect all his pieces looked, at at first I was very confused as to how his glazing was so detailed and perfect. He must have a very wide range of underglaze that is featured in all his pieces. Many of his vessels resemble sky or mountain landscapes and have beautiful shades of blues, purples and pinks. I also noticed many of his bowls tend to have a very small, narrow base and lead out to a wider top. I like this because they appear to be delicate and balanced as if they are capable of falling over at any moment. It also reminds me of those toy tops that must continuously spin in order to stay balanced. Then some vessels he has very detailed carvings etched all around them. I really enjoy/appreciate that because I know it must be really difficult to do and I would love to learn more about it.

  • bright colorful/dull
  • porcelain
  • wheel thrown
  • delicate
  • balance
  • imperfections

James Makins really stood out to me because of how unique some of her ceramic pieces were, even the the photos you can see the detail of the delicacy. They seem to tower pretty tall but they’re extremely skinny. They group of pieces I’m looking at aren’t functional but they are so creative. They really remind me of the cat in the hat because they are so tall and look like they are trying to balance themselves and I could definitely seem them as an image in one of Dr. Suess’ books. I love that theyy aren’t smooth and have lines of texture to them. I also love what looks like a random choice of colors, but they all reflect eachother so well. He also has many interesting different colors of glaze not usually seen such as gold and bright red and multiple shades of purple. He tends to do them in sets and then photograph them all together sitting ontop of a plate which has a cracked, usual look to it. I really enjoy all his unusual techniques overall.

Bullets:1

  • clay
  • blending glazes
  • neutral colors
  • technique
  • design
  • texture
  • nature
  • leaves/wood/dirt/water
What strikes me about Joy’s work is the texture. I love ceramics and have created many pieces, but have never really incorporated much texture into my work as I would like to see. Looking at her work really inspires me to had more texture to what I do, because she can take an ordinary thrown bowl and make it a work of art. Another thing she takes into consideration in not only the importance of the top of the piece, but the bottom as well. Making a foot, and cutting out certain pieces of the bottom gives her work a more unique look. I love the fact that all her pieces follow  common inspiration of nature. She uses a combination of neutral colors and her work is really down to earth. Another thing that stands out to me is how she combines and blends the glazes, in a way that they look like they were spray painted on. Her work is really admirable and I can definitely take some of what I have read and seen and apply it to my own work as well.

Leanne organized her artwork onto 7 different categories on her site. Each group actually is a series because they seem to follow the same theme or atleast the same color scheme. For example there is a vibrant series which consists of bright reds and yellows along with a contrasting black. These set of images reminds me of a volcano and the fierce, alarming site of lava. They are quite striking pieces that really grab my attention. Another set, titled indigo and blue, is just that. The group consists of many indigo and blue colored pieces. These iteams give me a very relaxed calming feeling, they really appeal to me because my favorite color is blue. As much as I really enjoy the pieces in this album, some are a bit too plain and lacking other aspects in order to fully capture my attention. My favorite series by far is titled Into the Depths. The numerous colors jump off the painting in each of these pieces. I really love the way that the colors work together to keep me looking at the image. Certain ones have different designs but they look almost accidental, giving the image some texture. When reading Leanne’s biography I noticed she paints in order to affect others emotions and physically heal them. She paints in order to have the same affect on peoples emotions that listening to music does. That aspect really gives me a lot of insite to her work and allow me to appreciate it so much more.

  • crazy
  • bright
  • toys

What stands out most about Sara’s art pieces and just her installation in general, is the strong relationship to her childhood and past. Although that might not be what she was trying to portray, all the barbies and stuffed animal heads makes me think of my own childhood… sort of in a creepy way. She takes a very different approach to her art and is daring in a way with some of the stuff she does. I really admired her one huge piece she had hanging up, it was collaged with mixed media. It had a variety of colors and for some reason really spoke to me because collage is always something that attracts my eye. Overall she had an interesting way of installing her pieces, with the newspaper and blue tape. It was definitely something that attracted all the kids, and I think that may be her target for the kind of admirers she is trying to attract, even though she didn’t mean to.

  • animals
  • dull colors
  • collage
  • text
  • 3D
  • print making

I mainly focused on his mixed media collection which was a wide variety of work. I really enjoyed the fact that he used recycled paint, as well as a majority of his media seemed to be recycled. It seems to be very vintage and old fashioned, there is not a lot of bright colors or anything too bold that stands out. I like that about his work but at the same time I can only take so much until I get a little bored with it. One thing I did admire about this work was print making he did. He used it on some of the backgrounds and such and I think it created a really cool image. He also has some really cool diptychs and triptychs which also tends to grab peoples attention.

  • accuracy
  • neutral colored backgrounds
  • drips/runs in paint
  • oil on canvas

The first thing I noticed when looking at Todd’s work was how architecture plays a big role in all his pieces. It almost looks like he created a graphic background before painting over it. I kind of like that because it gives it a geometric look and keeps his objects in line. However to me it appears his paintings are quite random, but I’m sure they must be meaningful to him in some way. The only issue I have with them is that I can’t exactly find a way connect to his objects like a random building/house or set of stairs. But overall I really love his technique and symmetric background it really plays a part and pulls the paintings all together. Each of the pieces are really built up collectively overtime and you can almost see the layers which really speaks to me. The last thing that stands out is his use of letting the paint run/drip down the page. This is something I’m sure Mr. Miller does not like but I believe the way in which he used this technique in his paintings really gave them a positive outcome.

  • Acrylic paint
  • Canvas
  • Accuracy
  • Connections/paintings tying together/common theme

The first painting that caught my attention by Celia Durand was one of a reflection of a pond. The setting is winter so it looks really icy and cold however I love how she was capable of capturing the reflection well enough so that it actually looks realistic. It is actually a pretty simple painting, like most of hers are; however the multiple shades of colors she uses makes it look so peaceful and beautiful. When viewing her online gallery I found that all of her pieces had a common theme, of nature. She tends to either paint winter scenes, or animals, mostly only birds. However, there a few paintings of spring and all of her flowers look like spring flowers. Another thing that really stood out to me is her painting style. Contradicting what Mr. Miller always tells us, she pretty much always has one big image of a flower in the center of the page, with a surrounding background of colors. So while her paintings are quite good, it actually seems to bother me that they seem kind of dull or boring because they don’t really jump off the page, they just sit there. However a really neat thing is that some of her backgrounds are buildings and places. She tends to make them very discreet but I really like it because you it isn’t a typical background when painting a large flower. The last skill that I admired by Celia was her use of open space. A skill that I always wished I knew how to do, she used the empty space to create her images. That is something I find interesting and wish to learn more about.

Jonita Griffith is an artist that first caught my eye with her very bright and lively use of everyday acrylic paints. Her paintings remind me a lot of a childhood, not particularly mine, but I feel as if a lot of kids could relate. Many of her images depict paintings I would possibly find in a children’s book because she includes a lot of imagination into her work. Her work feels very safe and warm, it is something that welcomes you in. I also picked up on her use of shading, shadows and fading colors to make her work look really 3D. I love how it looks as if it has a texture and you could reach out and feel some of her paintings; it really pulls the looker in. Another thing she is really strong at is her composition, which varies from piece to piece. Some are framed which seems fit, while others are bursting out of the edge which I personally admire. It would be interesting to see her do some other work besides the more cartoonish paintings. That is when I realized she had more abstract works and such that I really enjoyed. She is really good with playing around with patterns and I believe that contributes a lot to her work.

I chose to use Robert Smithson as my community connection, I found this artist on Mr. Miller’s website. Usually this is the type of art I would pass over, and sort of ignore. However i was deeply intrigued by Smithsons very different approach to all aspects of art. He has a wide variety of art pieces ranging from drawings and sketches to sculptures and earthworks. Starting with his sculptures, these are not only simple 3-D objects. He has taken something as simple as a pile of shells and set them up as a piece of art. With the mirror surrounding the back it creates a very full and balanced look and is quite interesting. This idea of piles and mirrors and mimicked throughout much of his artwork. His other artwork, such as the drawings, are very unique as well. Some of his drawings, which I do not like as much, are done in crayon. In my opinion it gives it much more of a little kid look. However he has many other pieces done in simple black in white which remind me of layouts or blueprints. Some look like little doodles while others look like architecture.  So I am very fascinated by Smitson’s approach on artwork. I believe he has created a well rounded portfolio including several approaches to what art is to different people.

I found this artist off your website and the first thing that really caught my eye was how his drawings had the appearance that they were vibrating. It almost reminds me of a 3D image, when your not wearing 3D glasses. All of his drawings all very vibrant and filled with a variety of colors. Some tend to look like a blueprint for a bigger project. When looking through his sculptures I found that some of his public pieces actually were his drawings. Whether he did the sculptures or the drawings first, I am not sure, my best guess would be the drawings were done first as an outline. It’s so fascinating how you see a single, flat sheet of paper turn into a full blown, life-size sculpture. I also found many of his public projects very interesting. He tended to create one piece multiple times. It’s called the electric kiss. When I first saw it my first thought was that it looked like a Hershey kiss, because it’s based off of that shape. It’s a fairly large piece, which is open so you can actually walk inside it. It’s located in Korea, Italy, and I’m sure many other places. I would love to actually be able to go and see one. He has many other public projects which are very interesting. I don’t usually find many public sculptures that fascinate me, but he definitely has quite a few. They are so eye catching and I really enjoy how you can actually go inside of the art.

As I was looking through the artists links on Mr. Millers page, I came across this artist Nancy. What first struck me about her work was how many individual pieces she had yet how alike they were. She creates stained glass but has a  certain way of going about this task. She first photographs buildings, structures, nature, etc. then she sketches out her photos. From this she finally completes the piece by using stained glass, which she fires in a kiln. I really enjoy her pieces because they are very urban looking and show a lot of the city while the stained glass approach gives it more of a vintage, down to earth feel. She mentions that stained glass is usually associated with religion based pieces. But she really changes the whole idea of stained glass with these urban city pieces. I also was fond of her work because there is so much you can do with it. With her pieces your able to just hang them up, suspend them in a window, or have them in a light box. Aside from the series of city pieces, she did a silhouette tree series. I love them because it becomes a sort of patterns or pieces all fit together. I enjoyed looking at her work because it was filled with fresh ideas of art that I don’t typically look at.

In order to find this artist I used the same site as before, I find it to be a really good source for art and art galleries because it is really realiable and shows the art pieces in a creative way. Not only does it post the gallery, and allow you to zoom, but you can read what the artists have to say and what others say about them. So it’s really kind of interesting. But this one artist I chose was an abstract artist. Her pieces really caught my eye at first because of how bright and colorful they were. As I began to look through her gallery, I really admired all her work. Each piece is so very detailed and there is so much to look at and discover. Something as simple as a backround, she is able to make so eyecatching. One other thing I really love is her use of texture, it really makes her art stand out as well as the contrast in colors. Something I found interesting was how she published a book of haiku’s to go along with a number of her paintings. This also reminded me of what we were doing in class, making out surveillance stories match up with our charcoal sketches.

I had a different approach to finding an artist this time around. Considering there is so many artists to choose from, I decided to take a survey of paintings and let the website choose what art I may be interested. It seemed to be pretty accurate because I ended up choosing Tracy from that final list. Her artwork is very intriguing and really pull you in. She uses very vivid and lively colors which drag your eye to her beautiful creations. Each piece has a different background and holds a different story. They mainly landscapes but at the same time they are kind of abstract.  You can see the various layers of paint and images that Tracy built up to her final creation. Each of her artworks differ, yet you can diffinitely see the similiarities in them. I also love the way she uses the paint splatters and drips, they aren’t found randomly scattered. But each drip and splatter has a set purpose whether it’s a bird or tree or a piece of the sky. I love each of her vividly beautiful creations.

When searching for an artist, I chose Alice for 2 reasons, the first because she has abstract pictures which remind me of many seen in class, and second because of her 4 pieces of winter, summer, spring and fall. Her gallery of artwork is pretty small, and I definitely would like to see what else she has to give. But of her 4 abstract pieces, they really called out to me because they look exactly like what we have been working on in class. It’s amazing to see artists who could have been doing this much longer then us, still create similar pieces. I really enjoy her abstract pieces and it seems she has done some work before. I like them because I can relate to them but they’re something new and fresh. Another reason I chose her was because of her other 4 pieces which were the 4 seasons. I kind of laughed to myself as I saw this, remembering how you talked of people who would do seasons for their assignments. And I must say I agree with you. When I see something like that it makes me think, what purpose does it have? It makes the artwork completely meaningless. Typically you are able to percieve art however you wish, but when you see 4 paintings, all labeled Winter, Summer, Spring, and Fall, it just takes away the meaning. It leaves you unable to interpret it because it is simply just another season. So I have mixed feelings on this small art gallery. But I would definitely say she needs to be a bit more creative.

Kathleen has a very interesting variety of work. It varies from paintings and mixed media to sketches and monotypes. My favorite set would probably be under the symbolism. Each piece is very different yet you can still see her consistency with the theme. From reading her statement, she tells of how she gets her ideas. Each piece is usually based off of a dream she has or a thought during meditation. I find her thought process interesting because she is not inspired by a certain person, but of her unconscious mind. Her paintings are also very spiritual. Many are of angels, or what seems like gods or the heavens. Each one is definitely related in some spiritual way so once again you can find a common theme here. I found really fascinating her other technique for paintings. She referred it to ‘archetypal realm of shared human consciousness’, where she remade images she had already seen. What I love about her symbolic mixed media is how a lot of it is layered. Not only that, but the paints seem to be transparent, allowing you to see through some areas and keeping the rest most dense. Her work is very spiritual and down to earth and that makes me really enjoy it. It’s eyecatching because there is a lot to look and you are able to interpret each one in your own way. I really liked looking at Kathleens work and it might have given me some ideas of my own.

  • acrylic paint

I  really liked Kate’s work but I think it would be interesting to see some pieces done in something besides acrylic. She tends to draw nude women, but not very detailed and usually a silhouette or very shadowed figure. She also has some pieces of only faces and then there is one of a ballerina and an elderly man. My two favorite pieces would have to be the ballerina and a piece where she uses multiplicity. I really love the ballerina because she actually uses detail without straying what she typically creates. Also the corner she is placed in creates a really interesting background. My second favorite piece is half of a face, she drew this 3 identical times and each time it is smeared a little more. So it creates an image that the face is either fading away, or moving. I also like this piece because it looks like there is a light shining on the face because of a certain glare thats created. As for the rest of the pieces, I definitely can tell that they might be people she knows or loves. One piece I recognize looks a lot like the picture of herself. And the picture of the elderly man could be someone shes knows because of the detail she adds to it, leads me to believe she was purposly trying to create a piece of someone. Also because it is a male and all of her other artwork is of women.  I’m surprised to see that her only education in art is from tutoring. I really enjoyed looking at her pieces because they’re beautiful and really catch your eye.

I went down to the small art display in ambler and I usually look in there when I walk by, but today I really enjoyed the artwork in there. There was two artists’ work displayed, one did sculptures and the other did paintings. I chose Mike Elliot who did the oil paintings on canvas. His work seemed so unique yet it all his pieces seemed related in a way. I’m interested to see if he has a statement because I feel that if I read it I could have a much better understanding of his work. His work seems very mysterious and he tends to draw this human figure who is either skin tone or blue colored. One thing that makes it stand out is that the figure it always bald and he has at least 3 pieces which are of the back of the head. My favorite thing about this artist is that he is very good with perspective, all his paintings appear to be popping out of the canvas yet they don’t have any texture whatsoever. Another thing I like appreciate about him is the way he creates the eyes, they seem to be peering into you and watching you mysteriously, sort of like they know something you don’t. One last thing I noticed about his pieces is that he is really good at painting human ears; although that sounds strange, they are the most detailed part of his creations. All around I really appreciated Mike Elliott’s work and if I could ever afford it, I would love to buy one of his pieces.
